Community Services (Code Enforcement)
Overview
The Town Code Enforcement and Animal Control duties are handled by the Community Service Officer (CSO).
Responsibilities
- Monitor and enforce a variety of applicable ordinances, codes, and regulations related to zoning, land use, nuisance housing, building codes, health and safety, blight, graffiti, and other matters of public concern.
- Enforce town animal regulations including, but not limited to, animal licensing, cruelty to animals, dangerous/vicious animals, and animal bites, including dogs, livestock, and fowl.
- Assist in containing and securing stray animals and delivering them to an agency or entity (veterinarian or shelter) that can help reconnect the animal with their owner.
- Serve as a resource and provide information on Town regulations to property owners, residents, businesses, the general public, and other Town departments and divisions.

Common Violations
The list below will provide information about some of the most common code violations.
Animals
- Improper removal, or lack, of animal defecation.
- According to leash laws, all animals must be properly kept under control. No person should allow an animal to run freely within the town.
- Noise level. It is unlawful for the person who has assumed the responsibility for an animal to permit such animal kept in any yard, house or other place to bark, howl, yelp, bawl, or make other loud and persistent noise in a manner that could be considered as excessive or continuous.
Weeds & Grasses
Grasses and weeds must be kept at a height of 8" or less in yards and alleys and 9" or less in fields and undeveloped lots.

Inoperable Vehicles
- Vehicles, including trailers and campers, may not park on yards.
- Inoperable vehicles, not currently licensed or incapable of operating, may not be stored on your property unless they are screened from public view.
- A vehicle may park in the same place on a street for 48 hours. After that, it must be moved.
Trash, Yard & Sidewalk
- Trash cannot be placed on the street or sidewalk where it can interfere with bicyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles.
- Trash must be stored in plastic/metal cans with tight-fitting lids, or in sealed plastic bags and cannot be left out for more than 12 hours before or after your trash collection.
- Everyone is required to shovel sidewalks within 24 hours after a snowfall ends.
- Grasses and weeds must be kept at a height of 8" or less in yards and alleys and 9" or less in fields and undeveloped lots.
- Accumulations of rubbish (vehicle parts, tires, scrap lumber, construction materials, appliances, leaves, and branches) are not permitted.
- No furniture designed for indoor use can be placed in your yard or on an unenclosed porch.
Graffiti
- Any graffiti vandalism, that is visible from any public facility, street, trail, or park, is declared to be a public nuisance.
